New York State’s historic Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) in 2014 set forth a series of ambitious goals for our state’s clean and renewable future. Amongst the most pronounced goals are a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 and at least 50 percent clean and renewable energy.
New York is already amongst the national leaders in energy efficiency: The Empire State ranks second – behind only Rhode Island – because of our reliance on mass transportation. Perhaps more encouraging is that New York generates nearly 30 percent of its energy from clean and renewable sources and is well on its way to 50 percent clean and renewable energy by 2030 if trends continue.
Less known to New York residents is their access to the historic NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery Program.
The NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery Program launched in 2014 to help New York homeowners reap the full benefits of residential solar ownership. If a New York homeowner qualifies for NY-Sun they will see an immediate reduction in their utility bill with no out-of-pocket cost and savings guaranteed by New York State.
Solar ownership is oftentimes seen as complicated and expensive. We put that myth to bed by helping Long Island homeowners learn if they are a good candidate for the program. What constitutes a good candidate for the program?
- A southern-facing roof in good condition: Solar panels best function on southern-facing roofs in good condition – typically 15 years or less.
- No significant shading issues: Solar systems approved through the NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery program must function at a minimum of 80 percent efficiency to be approved. Properties with significant shading issues are not traditionally the best fit.
- A working taxpayer or a taxable pension
Less than 25 percent of New York homeowners will qualify. Learn more about NY-Sun and find out if your home is a good candidate to benefit from New York taxpayer incentives to own a solar system:
New York’s New Leap Forward
New York State took another leap forward toward environmental justice and sustainability when 10,000 low-income residents were awarded free community solar, according to PV Magazine. Community solar allows people to leverage offsite solar installations for credit toward their electricity bills. These projects are ideal for people in metropolitan areas who do not own homes or do not have adequate conditions or space required to own a solar array.
While it is vital for homeowners to leverage taxpayer incentives like the NY-Sun On-Bill Recovery Program to own a solar array, residential solar ownership alone will not be enough to boost New York above-and-beyond its goal of 50 percent clean and renewable energy. Community solar represents just one of the many viable options for New York residents to benefit from clean and renewable technology.
NY-Sun is part New York State’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) and requires 50 percent of the state’s energy come from clean and renewable sources by 2030.
WE ACT Brings Solar To Harlem
Harlem residents are set to save more than $1.7 million in electric costs over the next 25 years thanks to WE ACT’s “Solar Uptown Now” campaign, according to AMNY. The group of community activists have been working to bring clean air solutions to upper-Manhattan since 1998.

Earth’s climate is headed toward catastrophe unless we all do our part, according to a new study produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
People often discuss what they might have done during pivotal historical events had they been alive to experience them. Far too few ask how their actions today will immediately impact the world for generations to come.
Our micro-actions foster macro-impact. For every person that decides to take public transportation instead of a car, opts for a meat-free meal, or selects a biodegradable product, we trigger a network effect. We create a green economy – one more sustainable for all. Bigger decisions like what car to drive, how to plan your next vacation and green energy solutions to power your home take far more consideration.
One of the most impactful ways a New York homeowner can begin to facilitate change is through solar energy. New York homeowners can leverage taxpayer incentives to take control of their energy production, slash their monthly electric bill, and most importantly take a stand against climate change. The average solar system contributes roughly the same impact that planting 50 trees has on the environment.
When a homeowner takes the first step to learn more about NY-Sun’s on-bill recovery program, they empower their families, neighborhoods, and global community. Even though less than 25 percent of New York homeowners will qualify for the program, receiving a solar education and the obstacles to make the switch are equally important. If you don’t qualify, perhaps a family member or close friend will.
We all want to be on the right side of history. It starts with how we treat each other and our planet – the only one we have.
Learn more about NY-Sun now and if you are eligible to qualify for the best way to go solar.

One Path Forward
The organization’s environmental-driven message is making waves as New Yorkers and the world collectively realize the imminent dangers of climate change.
The Million Solar Strong Coalition is comprised of industry, environmental, justice and community organizations united by the vision of a strong clean energy economy that works for all New Yorkers.
New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) already supports 30 percent clean and renewable energy by 2023, and 50 percent by 2030. Many believe the goal to be lofty, especially in light of California’s recent resolution to include solar technology on every new house.
A Solar Metropolis?
Peter Davidson and Tom Mattzie look at how solar can succeed in New York City, where property owners and tenants find it difficult to capitalize on solar’s benefits. From community solar to solar cooperatives, the rush for New York City to discover ways to leverage renewable energy’s benefits is on. (Read More from Crain’s New York Business)

Solar is everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start or what any of it means.
If you’re a Long Island homeowner, you should be aware of the options available to you – and which you should take advantage of.
What is a Solar Lease?
A solar lease is an agreement between a homeowner and a solar company that contractually provides solar panels to a homeowner for a designated period of time in exchange for a monthly payment.
Leases appear to be a great investment from the jump: A promised monthly savings on your electric bill and a hand in helping the environment.
Plus, when the lease term is up there will be better technology to replace it – right?
Unfortunately, many solar leases exploit homeowners.
Newsday’s Thomas Maier and Mark Harrington two weeks ago revealed a wealth of consumer complaints about solar leases.
Let’s be clear: Many solar companies ethically provide solar leases.
Yet even an ethical solar lease leaves the average homeowner with a 2.9 percent average annual increase on your savings.
What’s more? Most solar leases lock homeowners into longterm agreements that make it difficult for homeowners to move.
New York in 2014 realized this and decided to create a program to help.
The opportunity to make the switch to solar has never been easier for New York homeowners.
NY – Sun is a taxpayer incentive program that allows homeowners to reduce and lock their existing utility bill and outright own their solar system.
New York looks for solar ready houses – houses that solar can perform most effectively.
That means that less than 25 percent of New York state is eligible to qualify for NY-Sun.
If you want to help the environment, save money, and sustain Long Island’s economy, you owe it to yourself to find out if you qualify.Read More
We Believe Old Is New
You may have seen us walking around your neighborhood.
We may have even knocked on your door to speak to you.
We know not many people do this anymore.
That’s why we love to do it.
In a world dominated by targeted advertisements, we believe in a more traditional approach.
An approach where people who want to help the world want to speak to the people who can most benefit from NY – Sun.
An approach that allows you to see our knowledge and passion for New York and renewable energy.
An approach that helps us all.
What We Do
NY – Sun is a historic taxpayer incentive program that allows homeowners to go solar.
The ability to qualify for the program is where things get tricky.
We walk around neighborhoods to search for houses that could qualify for the program.
Less than 25 percent of the state will qualify for the program because the process is customized per household.
Credit scores, roof age, electric bill, and household orientation all weigh a tremendous amount in the process.
Although you may believe your house is a great fit for solar — and it may be — there may be a reason we don’t knock.
When we knock on your door to speak to you, it is because we believe that your house looks like an ideal candidate to meet the program criteria.
We want to make sure you are aware of your ability to help New York’s environment, economy, and sustainability.
A Custom Experience
We do not sell solar panels.
Even if you wanted to have solar on your home tomorrow, we work within the confines of the program.
It is a custom process that takes attention, time, and an experience custom-designed for your needs.
No two houses are the same.
We work to ensure you receive the best support in your transition to solar.
